Changes can occur anywhere, including in this one region. Just call it “Landscape”, the name of the area in Bandar Lampung which was known as a former localization area in the 1980s. In this place many social problems occurred, ranging from juvenile delinquency, drug use, to prostitution. In fact, legal prostitution in the “Landscape” area which has now been abolished still leaves its mark. Social problems in this region did not just gone. Some people still carry out the “operations” and this is clearly disturbing to many parties, especially people living in the area.
One of the parties who was disturbed by this social condition was Nursalim, a religious figure who lived in the region. This grandfather of one grandson thought that immorality must be avoided, so everyone involved in the act of prostitution must be shunned, including children who were victims of Commercial Sexual Exploitation of Children (ESKA).
Although in fact, they were not subjects but objects. Improper parenting and other social conditions make them inevitably involved in ESKA activities. For this reason, the Children Crisis Center (CCC) of Lampung actively organizes social movements to provide protection, fulfillment and respect for the rights of children victims of violence and child trafficking.
At first, Nursalim was reluctant to participate in activities held by the CCC because they were considered to support prostitution due to their policies in defending children of ESKA victims. However, along with the time, the CCC and Program Peduli often carried out positive activities that did not only involve children, but also the entire community in Way Lunik Village. These activities were carried out to make people aware that protection, fulfillment and respect for the rights of children victims of violence and child trafficking are the duty of all people.
In addition, the CCC also carries independent values, non-discrimination, democracy, equality, anti-violence, egalitarian, nonpartisan, and participatory so it encouraged the community to assess the children of victims of ESKA as children whose rights should be fulfilled, not as children who must be stigmatized.
The CCC socialization with Program Peduli turned out to be fruitful. Nursalim, who was reluctant to contribute and considered the children of ESKA victims as delinquent children and had to be shunned, was moved to change his perspective. He even donated a land of 12 x 8 meters to be used as a studio for children and the community in Way Lunik Village. This studio is called Sanggar Pelangi. In this studio, children can play and parents can get knowledge about the right parenting for children.
With the support of CCC and Program Peduli, Nursalim is now even actively mediating for social problems in Way Lunik Village, especially the “Landscape” area. Every Friday night, he holds regular lecture for mothers and gives lectures in mosque or musalla. Not only lectures on religion, Nursalim also gave lectures on childcare and children’s rights that must be fulfilled. It is hoped that parents can practice the right parenting for their children so that their children can avoid social problems that still exist at Way Lunik.
Nursalim’s involvement in the management of the Community Education Committee (KPM) of Way Lunik made him actively contribute to dealing with existing social problems, ranging from sexual harassment, juvenile delinquency, to domestic violence (KDRT).
It took a long time and a long process to be able to change the “Landscape” which used to be dark into a beautiful “Landscape”. However, this was not an obstacle for Nursalim and the surrounding community to continue to struggle to instill awareness in the community that stigma and discrimination are not the right thing to make changes. Inclusiveness is the thing that is the basis of change for everyone. Therefore, Nursalim hopes that the young generation in Way Lunik can become people who care about social problems in their region and realize inclusion, especially for children suffering from ESKA. That way, inclusion in Way Lunik is not just an illusion.
